Botanica in Originali
Johann Hieronymus Kniphof and Botanica in originali, seu Herbarium vivum
Botanica in originali, also known as Herbarium vivum, is a unique 18th-century botanical work created by the German physician and botanist Johann Hieronymus Kniphof. It stands out in the history of botanical illustration because of its unusual method of production.
Instead of relying only on traditional engraved drawings, Kniphof used an innovative technique to represent plants more directly. Working with printer Johann Michael Funcke, he used a process often called “nature printing.” This involved pressing real plant specimens onto prepared plates to capture their actual shapes and textures. The plates were then inked and used to produce printed images.
