1. Primary Search Methods

Keyword Search (main box) — Best for broad exploration. Searches titles, authors, and full text simultaneously.
Examples: echinacea  cough  respiratory
Pro tip: Check Extended Search to find every mention across all 2 million pages.

Title Search (left box) — Use when you know a specific book name or series.
Example: Eclectic Practice of Medicine or just Eclectic for all related titles.

Author Search (right box) — Find works by a specific historical figure.
Examples: Grieve  Scudder  Dioscorides

2. ⚡ The Semicolon Search (Advanced)

Use a semicolon ; to filter results for maximum precision. This tells the library: "Search for [Topic] only within [Category/Author]."

Read & Download — Open the full book or download a 6-page clip.
Translate — Convert results into your preferred language.

💡 Search Tips:  Start broad — use one word first, then narrow it down.  Use synonyms — if cough yields few results, try bronchial or respiratoryFollow the threads — let one discovery lead you to the next author or era.

About Us

The World Herb Library, founded by Christopher Hobbs, Robert Brucia, and Ed Smith, is a living archive of humanity’s deep relationship with the healing power of plants, bringing together the voices of herbalists, physicians, pharmacists, and scientists across time who studied and practiced herbal medicine.
With nearly 80% of the world’s population relying on traditional and complementary medicine, this knowledge remains not only relevant, but essential!

The Greatest Works on Natural Healing at Your Fingertips

Now for the first time the herbal healing wisdom from diverse cultures is captured and offered to a worldwide audience. The library will ultimately encompass nearly 8,000 individual volumes all fully searchable.

Our books are digitized from two of the world’s greatest personal Botanical libraries and gathered from digital libraries around the world.

Many of these books are simply no longer available. These rare and hard-to-find books document the entire history of herbal practice of many millions of people through the ages.

Instead of “secondary” literature, generated by people who were interpreting the ancients, you can now go directly to the printed knowledge of the great herbalists, scientists, and healers.
